Adoption Policy

We do not operate a blanket policy for whom we consider suitable applicants. Working couples would be considered where a dog has shown it can cope with periods alone, while many elderly people keep fit and able to offer constant companionship to one that suffers when left. We aspire to match a dog to a home where it would be happy to share with children or other dogs or cats, for example, and carry out extremely thorough home checks on all our prospective new owners.
We have a neuter/spay policy and ensure every dog is vaccinated and micro chipped prior to adoption. However, if it is in the best interest of the adoptive dog to delay neutering, the adoptive owner must ensure it is not bred from as failure to do so will be a breach of their contract with the PBDC Breed Rescue service. All dogs are asked to be insured.
This Rescue always retains all documents relating to the dog, except the microchip details and vaccination records, although the previous ownership will not be disclosed. The microchip change of ownership is completed by the Rescue with the Rescue number as the emergency contact. The new adopters will have signed the adoption form after understanding the terms and conditions, including the right to remove the dog from the home if considered unsuitable in the future. All rescue dogs must be returned to rescue if the circumstances of the adopters change and NOT passed on.
We constantly check our Rescue dogs when placed in their new homes. It is expected that the new adopters telephone the coordinator every day for the first week and then once a week for 4 weeks, followed by a call once a month for up to a year. We also complete an annual ring round yearly to see how things are. We are here to help and our priorities are our rescue dogs’ health and happiness. We are genuinely interested in how they are settling and can offer support if difficulties arise or circumstances change. We love getting e mails, pictures and phone calls etc. as this also helps us feel we are doing a worthwhile job.
We do not sell our rescue dogs. We ask for a donation which is immediately placed back into the Rescue fund to help support veterinary fees, food, transport etc. In previous years the average donation has been £300.
We rely entirely on donations and the fundraising efforts of our volunteers. Our rescue dogs are placed in loving foster homes until they have been assessed and considered suitable to be released to new homes. We have a super network of Papillon Assistants who help with transport, fostering, fundraising etc. Without these we would be unable to continue offering, through your support, these adoptive dogs a new lease of life.
