4th April
Dog World Carolyne Allward Chebsey has asked me to mention that Vikki Loader has taken over from Claire Butler, and will be writing the Junior Newsletter for the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club Newsletter. Vikki would welcome any new from the Juniors in the Breed and can be contacted on : xxxxxxxxxxxx (best time to get Vikki is after 6pm), by email: butterfly_starlet_22@hotmail.co.uk , by writing to her at c/o 15 Bronyon Close, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, IP33 3XB or by giving her your news at the shows. Please make a note of Vikki's email address as it is shown incorrectly in the Spring issue of the newsletter which is due out in April. The Spring Issue of the Newsletter is now available on line in the Members Area on the Papillon (Butterfly Dg) Cub's web site at http://www.papillonclub.co.uk/

Penny and Jim Robins were delighted to hear from Australia that Jaroma Glen Egin has gained his final points and is now an Australian Champion. He is now owned by Janet and Bill Stewart-Cook of Goodvibes Boxers and Papillons in Queensland.

At Tweedmouth Canine Society Theresa Collins took BOB, G1 and RBIS with Collness Rory Gory. BP and PG3 was Nigel and Terry Thurman's Lysandra's Zxi Ptrian. And at the Birmingham Toydog Society Liz and Alan Bartram took BP and BPIS with Burghbridge Maid of Gold, BOB went to Sandra Austin & Jane Thompson's Ch Jhanakia Highland Breeze.

Congratulations to Hazel and David Malcolm who have recently become grandparents again for the third time. Daughter Lorna gave birth to her first - a boy Jamie David weighing 7lbs 4oz. They are going to be very busy baby sitting I suspect!!!

The South of England Papillon Club will be holding its annual charity event on 3rd May 2008, after their AGM in the morning. This year, instead of a Sponsored Walk, they have challenged the South Wales PC to a Sponsored Match (Puppy and Adult) to raise money for an English charity - The Cinnamon Trust - and a Welsh one, Pets-in-Need (Carmarthen) - a small but very worthwhile Sanctuary (a selection of their Newsletters and details of their work can be seen at the Match). This will take place at Chieveley Recreation Centre, Nr. Newbury; Averil Cawthera-Purdy has very kindly agreed to judge, and your Sponsor Forms and details will be in the post by next week. Delicious lunch will be available by our usual professionals (£5 a head), free tea and coffee - so please do your best to get your dogs sponsored to take part in this Great Event! Papillon owners everywhere are welcome - you can decide which Club to play for when you arrive, and your baby puppies will again be welcome to try out their first steps (duly sponsored, of course! - we want to raise as much as possible for our charities - dog rather than human ones this year). Again a busy period for the officers and committee as of course the Club's Open Show which is held at the same venue will be just a fortnight later. I believe John Fothergill is judging this show, John of course is well known for his stewarding for our breed as well as for judging it. Make sure you keep your eyes open for the schedule advert in Dog World. And do try and support this very worthwhile venture, we all know that the SEPC has raised a great deal of money over the years for these various worthwhile causes.

News from the St. Patrick's Day Irish Kennel Club Celtic Winners Show held at the National Show Centre, Cloghran. BOB & GSD went to Carol Lees Ch. Bodebi Ray of Success, RGSD to Sue Belshaw's Belvisaj Simply Charming, GSB to Diane Mooney's Ch. Conysluck Magic Flute and RGSB to Stone's Parnassus Perfect Joy. In phalenes BOB & GSD went to Marion Sloan's Fr & Int. Ch. Austrene Academy Award, RGSD to Eileen Roberts and Caroline Smith's Serenglade Flagship By Rayol, GSB to Diane's Ch. Aporia Chiassoso and RGSB to Caroline Wood- Cox's Austrene Hollywood Calling Carasweet.
Our Dogs First of all, an important correction: the schedules for the South of England Papillon club's Open Show which were given out at Crufts may, I think, have had the wrong date on. The correct date for the Show is 17 May 2008. The schedules that were later posted all have the corrected date, but, if you received yours by hand at Crufts, please check the date on your schedule, and alert anyone else, too.

Caroline Allward-Chebsey adds to her note about sending things in for the Junior Newsletter, 'I should have added to the original note to you, that the Newsletter was up online now in the Members Area of the Club website for those that signed up to see it this way'. So that is another electronic advance - I still prefer to have my NL in my hand to read: it's good to have all the back numbers (mine now go back to 1981), it's amazing what good things they all had in them, and also very nostalgic to look back at past members' offerings.

Congratulations to Denise Welsh for some stunning wins at the Horsham DCS, where Kazim High Flyer won BOB, and Herumen Mountain Breeze for Kazim won BP and then went on to take the Toy Puppy Group by storm! I think this was a first for both of them, and must have made a great day! News from 'Down Under', in Australia Jaroma Glen Egin got his last points on 22 March and is now an Australian Champion: well done to his breeder, Penny Robins, and his new owners Janet and Bill (Goodvibes). Nearer home, another Jaroma dog, J. Geena Gee, took BOB at the Eastwood DCS open show: at the same show Breeze's Kazkell Daydream Believer took BP.

At Birmingham Toydog Soc. open show, where Joan Savage (Abbeyton) was judging, Austin and Thompson's Ch Jhanakia Highland Breeze won BOB, Mann and Hillier's Hilltribe Jackanapes at Melangel took the Reserve, and the Bartram's Burghbridge Maid Of Gold took BP (at her first show, and at only 6months and 2 days). There was an excellent entry of 35 dogs - 14 of which were in the Puppy class! Well done to all of them.

At North & South Shields CS open show, Olding and Munroe's Candygolds Daydreamer at Papplewick won BOB and then took Group 1 - another feather in his cap (or tail, perhaps?) after his Graduate class success at Crufts - well done! BP at the same show was Westwood's Darleair Best Kept Secret: the judge was Dominic Browne (Dobrugh). At Tweedmouth C.S. open show, where the judge was Mrs Patricia Clayton, BOB was won by Collins's Collness Rory Gory, who went on to take Group 1 and ended up RBIS - a very good win! BPIB at the same show was Thurmans' Lysandra's Zxi Ptrian, who also was third in the Puppy Group - well done to him also. And at Keighley DCS, where Angela Martin (Blairancoes) judged, BP went to Morton's Ablazzor Return To Sender, and BOB was Lanson's Beausher Coquelicot Du Nord At Cantoverde - well done both.

A plea from Keith Rimmer to please return any cups and trophies won at last year's Papillon Club Championship Show, so that they are there to be awarded at this year's show in April.

A rather alarming note has appeared on Papnet about the possible dangers of employing pet-sitters and dog-walkers. In the Hampshire and Sussex areas, several cases have been publicised where the dogs have been kidnapped by pet-sitters and then held to ransom. It's difficult to find out the full details of people who offer these services, but apparently (if you live in that area and are looking for a petsitter) the people to be wary of are a couple in their mid-30s, the man has a small beard: their plan of action is for one to engage you in conversation, while the other goes after the dog. Four labradors and two spaniels have already been taken: one lady was lucky as her spaniel is whistle-trained and she managed to get him back. So do be careful.

Denise Welsh is at this moment dealing with a horrific rescue case: phone call from north London, 3 elderly Papillons need to be collected NOW! Denise's husband very nobly drove there after his day's work and brought back 3 obese small dogs, hardly recognisable as Paps. They are safely with Denise now, but she has a real job on her hands: their fur is so filled up with dried faeces that she says they look like Pulis, nails (obviously never trimmed) are curved round and up at the sides so they can hardly walk, and two were wearing choke chains that were embedded in their fur nearly into the neck. The story is that they were owned by an 'elderly Spanish lady' who had had a stroke and been admitted to hospital: she had asked her son to look after them for her. The 'looking after' consisted of leaving all 3 shut in the front passage-way of the house: how long they had been there was hard to tell, but Alex says the smell was unbelievable, and they were sitting on piles of soiled newspaper up to their elbows, no bedding or anything. The pictures (which Denise has put on Papnet) show the dreadful curved nails which the poor dogs had to try and walk on - the length of them would indicate at least a year's growth. The state of them was unbelievable, but the amazing thing is that after all this long ordeal they licked Denise's hand and wagged their poor poo-laden tails. Denise has had to shave the coats off two of them, so they are rather chilly, but after a bath and nail-clipping they are now much more comfortable, and Denise's dogs are doing their best to help them recover.
